I could have sworn it was a new word created by some brand attempting to fool customers into thinking they were buying real diamonds, but no: diamante actually goes back to the turn of the century — from a form of the French verb diamanter, meaning “to set with diamonds.” Today it not just “rhinestones” but also “the subset of artificial, diamond-like adornments that aren’t actually diamonds but also aren’t rhinestones.” Whatever that means.
